The Pilgrim’s Progress Page

March 8, 2009

We concluded our study of Pilgrim’s Progress with a testimony session where our people spoke about the themes, people, and places in Pilgrim’s Progress that meant the most to them. It was an encouraging time, but we had a recording malfunction and only got a bit of the session recorded. As a result we decided not to keep it.

Instead, we offer this post as a summary and link resource for all our Pilgrim’s Progress sessions.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): Entering the Celestial City

Our study of Pilgrim’s Progress comes to a close this week. We follow the pilgrims through the last period of danger, the Enchanted Grounds, then watch their sojourn in Beulah Land. It is from here that pilgrims are called to the Celestial City and we see  numbers of them called on to glory as Bunyan’s allegory closes. Next week we will have a testimony time for our folks to talk back to me about what the Lord taught them in this series.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): The Delectable Mountains

In this section, we see the pilgrims working their way along the way from just past Vanity Fair to the Enchanted Ground. On the way, the men of the party dispatch Giant Despair and rescue two fainting pilgrims, they meet the Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains and learn more spiritual lessons there, and meet a new manly Christian, Mr. Valiant-for-truth.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): Gaius Welcomes the Pilgrims

In this section we cover two homes which host the pilgrims (and provide brides for Christiana’s sons). One of these houses is in the midst of Vanity Fair, where they find less trouble than Christian and Faithful did, due to a greater number of pilgrims and the guilty consciences of those who dwell in the Fair. The pilgrims are pictures of victorious Christians living in the midst of an evil world.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): Trials in the Valley of Humiliation

In this section, the Christian family travels through the Valley of Humiliation, the place where Christian fought Apollyon. They find this to be very fruitful ground for Christians. Then they enter the Valley of the Shadow of Death, a place of much temptation and trial for believers. They learn here the value of prayer and of resisting the devil. Finally, meeting up with an elderly pilgrim, Mr. Honest, they learn the value of fearing God and shunning evil as they hear the stories of Mr. Fearing and Mr. Self-will.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): At the House Beautiful

The family of believers arrive at the House Beautiful, Bunyan’s image of the local church where they gain assurance of salvation, catechising of the young, the dangers of marrying unbelievers, the healing of evil influences (by a medicine called ‘ex carne et sanguine Christi‘), and several lessons for future meditation.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): Great Heart Guides Christiana

In this section, the man Great-heart begins to serve as an escort for Christiana and her company on the pilgrim pathway. The chapter begins with a fairly complicated discussion of the particular righteousness from Christ that is imputed to sinners in salvation, that is, the righteousness of his obedience to the Law. The chapter retraces Christian’s footsteps up the Hill of Difficulty to the cross and then on to the gates of the House Beautiful. Along the way, the company learns the same lessons Christian learned, but in new ways and with new perspectives. Great-heart dispatches a new enemy, Mr. Grim Bloody-man, who would bar their entrance into the House Beautiful as the chapter closes.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): The Interpreter’s House

Christiana and Mercy arrive to a loving welcome in the House of the Interpreter, where they are taught many lessons from Bunyan’s homely examples. It seems that the Interpreter represents the Holy Spirit who instructs believers in the way of wisdom. The Spirit also washes, sanctifies and prepares the pilgrim for the journey. All believers would do well to halt at Interpreter’s house and gain wisdom for the way.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): Mercy goes with Christiana

We continue our survey of Pilgrim’s Progress as Christiana and her boys and then Mercy are admitted at the Wicket Gate to the way of salvation by the Lord who bought them. They are received regardless of how they came on the basis of their desire to obtain the salvation He bought for them. As they set out, they are set upon by two ill-favoured men. In sending them off, they learn a lesson concerning the value of prayer and why our Lord requires it.

Pilgrim’s Progress (2): Christiana Follows Christian

We resume our study of Pilgrim’s Progress, looking at the first bit of the second part of the book. Here we find Christiana, the formerly scoffing wife of Christian, moved by his death and his testimony to enter on pilgrimage, following his footsteps. Her decision shocks most of her neighbours, but begins to influence one.
